Birding Across Sulawesi
The Sulawesi–Halmahera Birding Expedition is one of Indonesia’s most rewarding birdwatching adventures, taking you deep into the Wallacea bioregion—a natural bridge between Asia and Australia where evolution has created some of the world’s most unique birdlife. Over 14 days, you’ll explore the rich habitats of North Sulawesi and Halmahera, from volcanic highlands and lush rainforests to coastal mangroves, searching for some of the rarest and most colorful endemics on Earth.
In Sulawesi, the journey covers the island’s top birding sites: Tangkoko Nature Reserve, Dumoga–Bone National Park, Mount Mahawu, and Lore Lindu National Park. Here, you’ll have the chance to encounter Sulawesi’s iconic endemics such as the Maleo, Purple-bearded Bee-eater, Sulawesi Pitta, Sulawesi Lilac Kingfisher, Knobbed Hornbill, and the elusive Geomalia. Each location offers a blend of lowland, montane, and coastal habitats—ensuring a spectacular diversity of sightings throughout the island.
After exploring Sulawesi, the adventure continues with a short flight and boat transfer to Halmahera, the largest island in the Maluku archipelago and home to several of Indonesia’s most stunning Birds-of-paradise. Highlights include the Wallace’s Standardwing Bird-of-paradise, Ivory-breasted Pitta, Blue-and-white Kingfisher, and White Cockatoo, all set against a backdrop of pristine tropical forest and warm island hospitality.
The Sulawesi–Halmahera Birding Trip perfectly combines adventure, discovery, and cultural connection. Guided by expert local bird guides, you’ll not only witness the incredible diversity of Indonesia’s avifauna but also gain a deeper appreciation of the people and landscapes that make Wallacea so extraordinary.
