Beyond the Birds-of-Paradise, the Arfak highlands are home to an incredible array of endemics.
The Arfak Mountains Birding Trip (5 Days / 4 Nights) is a dream adventure for birdwatchers seeking Papua’s most prized endemics, set in one of the most biodiverse highland regions of West Papua. Towering above Manokwari, the Arfak Mountains are covered in pristine montane forest where misty mornings, towering trees, and hidden forest clearings provide the stage for unforgettable birding experiences. This expedition focuses on finding the region’s most iconic species, from dazzling Birds-of-Paradise to some of the world’s most unique highland specialties.
One of the highlights of this journey is the chance to witness the spectacular courtship dances of the Magnificent Bird-of-Paradise and the rare Western Parotia, whose ballerina-like display is among the most enchanting rituals in the bird world. At carefully prepared hides, you’ll also have opportunities to observe the elusive Black Sicklebill and Long-tailed Paradigalla, both sought-after treasures for serious birders. Early mornings and late afternoons in the forest bring endless possibilities, with each day offering a mix of surprise encounters and targeted searches.
Beyond the Birds-of-Paradise, the Arfak highlands are home to an incredible array of endemics. Birders can expect sightings of the Vogelkop Bowerbird, famous for its elaborately decorated bowers, and the striking Feline Owlet-nightjar. The forests also shelter Masked Bowerbird, Spotted Jewel-babbler, Mountain Owlet-nightjar, Papuan Treecreeper, Arfak Honeyeater, Black-breasted Boatbill, and the exquisite Garnet Robin. For those with patience and luck, the mysterious Shovel-billed Kookaburra may also appear. The diversity of habitats—ranging from lower montane to mossy highland forest—ensures a rich birding experience with plenty of photographic opportunities.
